Exclamatory Sentence

Definition: Exclamatory sentences use exclamation marks for emphasis.

Example: “She scared me!”

Declarative Sentence

Definition: Declarative sentences make proclamations.

Example: “The pie tastes delicious.”

Imperative Sentence

Definition: Imperative sentences issue commands.

Example: “Amar, hand me that pencil.”

Interrogative Sentence

Definition: Interrogative sentences ask questions.

Example: “Did the mailman drop off the package?”

Diagramming Sentences

Definition: A visual organization system that you can use to see how the parts of speech like nouns, verbs, prepositions, and articles.

Parallelism

Definition: Parallelism is a stylistic structure that creates uniformity within a sentence. 

Examples:

  • Incorrect Example: Jada loved to read books, to write poetry, and playing music.

  • Correct Example: Jada loved reading books, writing poetry, and playing music. 

Run-On Sentences

Definition: Run-on sentences occur when two or more independent clauses are not linked by a conjunction or proper punctuation.

Example: “I love ducklings I love chicks.”

Sentence Structure

Definition: How all the parts of a sentence work together. 

Subject-Verb Agreement

Definition: In a sentence, a subject’s number must always match the verb’s number, whether the sentence uses a singular-singular structure or a plural-plural structure. Singular subjects take singular verbs and plural subjects take plural verbs. Some verbs (like ‘drive’) use the same form for both singular and plural numbers, so if there is doubt about a particular verb, check its standard forms.

Example: 

  • Incorrect: "The teams is winning." 

  • Correct: "The teams are winning."
