Modifiers

Modifiers

Definition: According to Grammarly, modifiers describe certain parts of a sentence in more detail. They can be adjectives, adverbs, adjectival phrases, adverbial phrases, adjectival clauses, adverbial clauses, and limiting modifiers.

Examples: 

  • Adjectives: “The presumptuous child gnawed on a popsicle.”

  • Adverbs: “She slowly crossed the street.”

  • Adjectival phrases: “Girls without purses look unadorned.”

  • Adverbial clauses: “He sauntered to the post office.”

  • Adjectival clauses: “The businessman who always ate steak with a spoon started a restaurant.”

  • Adverbial clauses: “Mother told me to come home after school ended.”

  • Limiting modifiers: “She wrote only ballads.”

Adjectives

Definition: Adjectives modify nouns.

Example: “The silly dog barked at me.”

Adverbs

Definition: Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.

Examples: 

  • Modifying verbs: “She told Dad yesterday.”

  • Modifying adjectives: “The horrifically long film ended.”

  • Modifying other adverbs: “The giraffe ate extremely slowly.”
